The marketing plan myth

there’s a better way to drive results

You Don’t Need a Marketing Plan

Do I need to create a marketing plan?

Creating a marketing plan can be a great idea and incredibly useful, if not imperative for some businesses — but it can also be a rather daunting activity if you’re not intimately familiar with digital marketing. To be effective you need to know what the channels are, what they’re used for, how to use them, as well as have the time and resources to effectively deploy them. They can be enlightening, effective, and exciting — but also a lot of work, a lot of time, and often a lot of money.

It’s our belief that small businesses and start-ups are more likely to commit (and be successful) with their marketing if they baby-step into a robust program. For example, it’s the same philosophy with New Years Resolutions – small goals (for example, “run 2 minutes a day” rather than “run 2 miles a day”) are more likely to be kept and yield the outcome you were originally seeking.

Can I be successful if I don’t create a marketing plan?

Absolutely! Particularly if you’re just starting off and have limited resources. We believe in stair-stepping your way through marketing, rather than trying to do everything at once. It’s a concept called “snowball effect“: “a process that starts from an initial state of small significance and builds upon itself, becoming larger.”

To begin, start with a tactic you can commit to completing and nurturing — because marketing is not set it and forget it. From there, learn from that tactic, optimize from your learnings, develop it until it’s in a healthy rhythm. Finally, when you feel confident that you have the time, energy, and resources move to the next tactic.

Done is better than perfect, but half-assed marketing deployment is often noticed by your customer — which may not be the tone you want to set.

It is worth noting that a marketing plan is critical to a lot of companies — they can even be the catalyst to success. We are not anti marketing plan.  We are pro realistic goal setting and making sustainable progress.

How do I start marketing without creating a marketing plan?

Start with a high-opportunity initiative to launch your marketing program. Make a SWAG (scientific wild-a$$ guess) about your unique selling points (USPs), messaging angle, tone, etc. Launch the initiative and collect data on your results. Then evaluate the data to find out what’s resonating and what’s not. Optimize (aka make some tweaks). Test the new version. Evaluate results, optimize, test…

Once you feel like that tactic is in a good place and resonating with your audience, move to the next tactic. Repeat the cycle again. Except maybe this time you’ve discovered something in your second tactic you can employ in your first tactic. Test it! See what happens. Then eventually move on to your third tactic.

Testing should be the joy of marketing (besides revenue, of course). It’s a win-win! You’re learning valuable lessons of what to do and of equal importance — what not to do. You can cascade these lessons to other functions of your business (such as your website, elevator pitch, or sales team). The learnings will compound and eventually you’ll have yourself a flywheel where each component feeds and accelerates the next through cross-functional learnings as well as performance wins.

The bottom line:

To sum it up, if you want to bring your business to life you need to leverage marketing to learn and grow. Re-invest the learnings back into all business functions, which in-turn, shifts your company into an efficient engine.
